Government promoting truck safety technologies

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is teaming up with the trucking industry to encourage the use of advanced driver assistance systems in commercial fleets. The move is designed to make roadways safer in California and across the United States.

During a presentation at the American Trucking Association's Management Conference and Exhibition in San Diego on Oct. 5, the FMCSA administrator said that advanced safety technologies offer "real benefits" to trucking companies and truckers. As a result, the U.S. Department of Transportation is paying for a two-year monitoring program to measure the effectiveness of such technologies, including lane departure warning systems and automatic emergency braking systems, in real-world scenarios. Several truck manufacturers, including Daimler Trucks North America and Volvo Trucks North America, currently offer semi-automated safety features on their newest trucks.

Meanwhile, FMCSA is also pushing a pilot program that lets former military drivers between the ages of 18 and 20 qualify for interstate commercial driver's licenses. The move is intended to expand the commercial truck driver pool while still ensuring traffic safety. Federal law currently prohibits commercial drivers under the age of 21 from crossing state lines.

Victims of truck accidents often suffer catastrophic injuries that require long-term medical care. However, attorneys from a Costa Mesa truck accident injury compensation law firm might be able to file a personal injury lawsuit on a victim's behalf and work to obtain a fair settlement. If the claim is successful, the victim might receive compensation for current and future medical bills, rehabilitation expenses, wages lost during recovery, pain and suffering, property loss and more. Victims may be able to learn more about truck accident claims by scheduling a consultation with an attorney.
