Every year, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance holds an inspection spree called the International Roadcheck for vehicle- and driver-related violations among CMV drivers. On average, 17 CMVs are inspected every minute during these sprees. Truck and bus drivers in California should know that the 2019 International Roadcheck is to be conducted from June 4 to 6.
The majority of inspections will be Level I inspections, which are the most comprehensive. Inspectors will be checking components like the brakes, steering, suspension, tires, wheels, lights and cargo securement devices. Drivers, for their part, will need to show their CDLs, Medical Examiner’s Certificates and work logs.
Steering and suspension will be the focus of the 2019 Roadcheck because these are crucial in maintaining control and stability during braking and accelerating. They also maximize contact between the tires and road, allowing for good handling. Steering and suspension keep the tires in alignment, which in turn prevents the tires from developing uneven wear and failing as a result.
Those who pass the inspection will receive a CVSA decal as an indicator. Drivers or trucks that do not pass will be put out of service. The 2018 International Roadcheck ended with nearly 12,000 CMVs and 2,600 drivers being issued out-of-service orders. Brake issues and hours-of-service violations were the top reasons.
