CVSA to hold Operation Safe Driver Week

On Behalf of | May 13, 2019 | Auto Accident Injuries |

California motorists should keep the date July 14 in mind because that will mark the start of the 2019 Operation Safe Driver Week. The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance will have law enforcement officials across North America searching for speeding commercial and passenger drivers, and those who are stopped may be issued a warning or citation.

Last year, the event led to 113,331 passenger and CMV drivers being stopped. There were some 51,000 law enforcement officials involved. The number of citations issued was 57,405, and the number of warnings given was 87,907. Speeding citations were handed to 16,909 passenger vehicle drivers and 1,908 CMV operators.

Other unsafe practices that police will be looking for include distracted, aggressive, and drunk driving. Drivers may also be stopped for improper lane changes, neglecting their seat belt, ignoring traffic control devices and not maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle in front.

Speeding is the focus because it has contributed to more than a fourth of all car crash fatalities since 2008, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Highway Loss Data Institute. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that speeding factored into 94% of traffic crashes in 2015 and 26% of traffic deaths in 2017 .

With the help of Costa Mesa auto accident injury lawyers, the victims of a speeding-related crash may be able to determine if they are eligible for compensation. A network of investigators and other professionals may obtain proof of negligence against the defendant, including physical evidence at the crash site. A lawyer may then negotiate for a settlement with the at-fault driver’s insurance company
