California has third highest number of senior crash deaths

| Jul 24, 2019 | Auto Accident Injuries |

California has the third-highest number of fatal accidents involving senior drivers in the U.S., according to a new study by TheSeniorList.com. The purpose of the study, which used data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, was to determine which states have the worst senior drivers.

Federal statistics show that there are approximately 42 million drivers ages 65 and above in the U.S., which is almost 60% more than there were in 1999. The study found that the states with the highest number of fatal accidents involving senior drivers were Florida, Texas, California, Georgia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Tennessee, Michigan and New York. Meanwhile, the states with the lowest number were New Hampshire, South Dakota, Delaware, Hawaii, North Dakota, Wyoming, Vermont, Alaska, Rhode Island and the District of Columbia.

While traffic deaths among other age groups have generally fallen over the last 10 years, they have significantly increased among drivers 65 and up. In fact, 7,000 older drivers died in motor vehicle accidents in 2017, accounting for nearly one in every five deaths on U.S. roads. In addition, older drivers accounted for 14% of all drivers involved in deadly crashes that year even though they only make up only 19% of all U.S. drivers. According to experts, older drivers who are suffering from diminished sight, hearing, motor control abilities or memory might need to stop driving for safety reasons.

Costa Mesa auto accident injury lawyers might help victims of car accidents recover compensation for their losses. Legal counsel may assess a victim’s case, help collect evidence supporting a personal injury claim and file a lawsuit against the driver who caused the crash in civil court. This might help the victim obtain a settlement covering medical expenses, lost income, mental distress, pain and suffering, property loss and other crash-related damages.
