Dump truck accidents on the rise

| Dec 28, 2018 | Truck Accidents |

Serious accidents involving dump trucks and ready-mix concrete delivery trucks are on the rise in California and across the United States according to the Federal Motor Carrier Administration. As a result, federal regulators and traffic safety experts are pushing trucking companies to take steps to reduce driver fatigue and adopt technology that monitors driver performance on the road.

The FMCA reports that dump truck accidents serious enough to require the vehicle to be towed away jumped by 9 percent to 8,206 in 2016, which is the most recent year of statistics available. In addition, injury accidents involving dump trucks accidents rose by 2.7 percent to 5,483 that year. Meanwhile, there were 838 towaway crashes involving ready-mix concrete delivery trucks in 2016, which is an increase of 9.6 percent over 2015. Injury accidents involving ready-mix concrete delivery trucks jumped by 3.8 percent. The only bright spot is that fatal dump truck crashes dipped slightly from 369 in 2015 to 367 in 2016.

The increase in crashes reverses a downward trend in large truck accidents that began in 2000 when the federal government and insurance companies pushed safety programs and advanced technology designed to reduce accidents in the industry. These efforts led to a significant drop in overall accidents involving dump trucks, ready-mix concrete delivery trucks and other large trucks. The recent uptick in truck crashes is blamed on several factors, including cellphone-related distracted driving, speeding and companies that offer by-the-load incentives.

Trucking accidents can cause severe injuries and death. Victims of truck crashes may find relief by consulting with a Costa Mesa truck accident injury compensation law firm. The firm could assess a victim’s case and help prepare a personal injury lawsuit seeking compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering and other crash-related damages. If a victim is killed in a truck accident, the firm could file a wrongful death claim on behalf of the victim’s family.
