Car accidents don’t disappear during California’s summer

Many people associate dangerous driving conditions with winter storms, icy roads and poor visibility. However, car accident risks remain very high during the summer months, even in relatively temperate California. In some cases, summer actually creates additional traffic hazards due to increased travel, tourism, construction activity and risky driving behaviors.

For starters, the summer vacation season brings more vehicles onto California roads. Families travel for vacations, teenagers spend more time driving and popular tourist destinations become heavily congested. Highways near beaches, amusement parks, national parks and entertainment districts often experience increased traffic volume throughout the summer. More vehicles on the road naturally increase the likelihood of collisions.

Additional safety considerations that escalate during the summer months

School breaks mean that younger and less experienced drivers spend more time behind the wheel. The period between Memorial Day and Labor Day is sometimes referred to as the “100 Deadliest Days of Summer” because crash rates involving teenage drivers often rise significantly during these months.

Distracted driving is also a major issue in the summertime. Drivers may become less attentive during long road trips or while navigating unfamiliar areas. Cell phone use, GPS distractions, eating in the car and conversations with passengers can all contribute to serious accidents.

Summer celebrations and holiday weekends may also increase impaired driving risks. Alcohol-related crashes often rise around holidays such as Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Labor Day. Drivers attending parties, concerts, sporting events or beach gatherings may make dangerous decisions before getting behind the wheel.

California’s extreme summer heat can create hazards as well. High temperatures may contribute to tire blowouts, overheated engines and vehicle malfunctions. Drivers stuck in heavy traffic during heat waves may become fatigued, impatient or aggressive, increasing the risk of collisions.

Construction zones are also especially common during warmer months. Road repairs, lane closures and detours may create confusing traffic patterns and sudden slowdowns. Drivers who speed through construction areas or fail to pay attention to changing road conditions may cause devastating accidents.

Motorcyclists, bicyclists and pedestrians are also more active during summer, creating additional safety concerns. Drivers who fail to share the road responsibly may cause severe injuries to vulnerable road users.

Remaining alert, patient and cautious during the summer travel season can help reduce accident risks, but even careful drivers cannot control the behavior of others on the road. In summer, accidents happen. It’s important to understand one’s rights accordingly.
