Major manufacturers including new truck safety technologies

| Dec 4, 2018 | Truck Accidents |

Technological advances in monitoring, data and analytics are driving a surge of safety in the trucking industry. Among the new technologies that trucks are using in California are systems like automatic braking and backup alarms. According to the technology product manager for manufacturer Mack Trucks, that company has been investigating new truck safety technologies since the early 2000s, which is when it started including such features as traction control and stability control in its vehicles.

The technology product manager went on to say that changes to entertainment technology have also increased the safety of large trucks on the road. Features like Bluetooth connectivity, Apple Car Play, voice activation and satellite radio allow truck drivers to navigate entertainment options while still keeping their hands on the wheel and their eyes on the road.

Trucks in Mack’s Anthem line have stationary object detection, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning technology included as standard features. Both Mack Trucks and truck manufacturer Penske are using video-monitoring tech to collect data and video to spot issues and improve driver safety. Penske Logistics equips some truck cabs with onboard cameras facing both inward and outward. Video collected by the cameras when risk incidents occur can later be used to train drivers. Risk incidents include everything from hard braking to near-collisions. According to the safety logistics vice president at Penske Logistics, video is a great tool for coaching because it’s like being in the cab with the truck driver.

Motor vehicle accidents involving large trucks are often quite severe because of the size of the trucks involved and because they often occur at highway speeds. A truck accident injury law firm might be able to help someone who has been hurt in a truck accident by negotiating a settlement with the at-fault driver and trucking company.
