It can be frightening when road rage is directed at you. A driver yelling at you, using insulting gestures, constantly honking or flashing their lights or tailgating you can take your attention away from driving. You may be more concerned about your safety.
So, how can you respond in such a situation to stay safe while focusing on the road?
Breathe
Consider doing breathing exercises when facing road rage. These exercises can help you calm down and, in turn, put you in a position to make judgments not clouded by emotions.
Pay attention
When you are around a driver with road rage, you need to pay attention to your surroundings. Unfortunately, some aggressive drivers take their behavior too far. Therefore, you need to know what’s happening around you while looking for a safe way to get out of the situation.
Let them pass
If the driver engaging in road rage is behind you, you should let them pass. Move to a different lane or pull over into an open parking lot or gas station.
Don’t make eye contact
Making eye contact with an angry driver might escalate the situation. They may view your eye contact as challenging them. Consequently, they might continue acting aggressively.
Call the police
If the driver does not pass and their aggression toward you is getting worse, it might be wise to call the police. This is especially important if you pulled to a stop and the other driver also stopped rather than carrying on their way. Make sure your doors are locked and your windows are up, too.
If an aggressive driver injures you, consider legal guidance to hold them responsible for their negligent actions.
