Exchanging information with the other driver after a wreck

On Behalf of | Apr 19, 2025 | Auto Accident Injuries |

When you are involved in a car accident, you are required to exchange information with the other driver. Failing to do so can result in a traffic infraction punishable by a fine and court fees. Therefore, you must not leave an accident scene without exchanging information.

Here is what you need to remember in this situation:

Get relevant details

The details to exchange with the other driver include:

  • Names and addresses
  • Dates of birth
  • Driver’s license numbers
  • Vehicles’ license plate numbers
  • Insurance information (name of insurance company, policy number and expiration date)
  • Vehicle owner’s name and address (if the driver is not the owner)

Exchanging such information facilitates the claim process. When you inform your insurance company about the accident, you will provide them with the details you collected. They can then contact the other driver’s insurer to file a claim. If the other driver had left the accident scene without exchanging information, it would have been impossible for your insurer to know the respective company to contact.

Avoid certain mistakes

For starters, avoid discussing the accident – how it happened, who was at fault and so on. This is because you may say something that can be used against you later.

Additionally, do not admit fault for the accident. For example, saying, “I’m sorry” or “I didn’t see you” can be viewed as admitting fault. Further, avoid talking about your injuries.  If you say, “I’m not hurt,” or any other statement that minimizes your injuries when the other driver asks if you are fine, your compensation may be negatively impacted.

Lastly, refuse to settle the accident at the scene if the other driver offers you cash. That can only lead to problems for you.

A lot usually happens when drivers are exchanging information after an accident. It’s essential to pay attention and act cautiously. Legal guidance is wise.
